Employability skills: This component draws on the unique York Strengths Employability Skills programme, helping students develop skills that may be of use to them in the increasingly globalised and competitive job market. The course introduces the nine key York Strengths, developed in collaboration with multinational employers, to raise awareness of key employability skills, and gives students practical tools to help them assess and develop their skillset. The course offers a set of practical tasks with a focus on application and feedback through hands-on group work activities, which are also complemented with tasks for reflection and self-study. The nine York Strengths covered include Digital Connector, Agile Learner, Authentic Communicator and Problem Solver. The course also focuses on presenting key skills at a job interview. Students will become familiar with techniques to help answer competency based interview questions, and they will have an opportunity to present some of their key employability skills at a mock job interview.

Academic study skills: This component provides students with the opportunity to enhance the academic skills required to study and research at a UK university, from innovative note-taking techniques to refined presentation skills. Students will experience academic life at the University of York and develop their ability to carry out and present effective research, communicate effectively in seminars and use technology and 21st Century skills to become more connected, receptive and creative in their approach to learning in Higher Education.

Coventry University pedagogy has a focus on activity-led learning and within a learning environment that ensures learners are engaged in teaching sessions to enable them to benefit and flourish. All aspects of the programme will have a form of practical and experience based application embedded or attached to support our cutting edge research, ethos and best-practice.

The programme will include group work, interactive learning and visits to local community projects, supported by online international information and the chance to interact with current students. Value will be added by providing the students with social and networking opportunities via a variety of different mediums. Drawn from multiple disciplines across the social sciences disciplines, the short course will present a diverse and topical programme based on experiential learning. It will make use of a range of instructional tools including role plays, case studies and debates.

Throughout the course, students will be provided with the opportunity to actively experiment in order to engage with key concepts in a participatory and meaningful way. In order to ensure students’ personal and professional successes, we aim to foster the development of intercultural competence from a British and global perspective within the short course.

On campus, all programme attendees will participate in interactive and experiential workshops facilitated by the teaching faculty and appropriately trained CU lecturers & students. Through the sessions students will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and learn strategies relating to intercultural concepts which will enable them to become more culturally intelligent.

4-Week Summer School Outline

Game Development is an exciting, multidisciplinary application of the principles of computer science. It challenges us to leverage our understanding of performant code, our knowledge of user interface and user experience design, while encouraging us to indulge our imaginations and creativity. It’s also the only aspect of computer science which creates programs we want to share with our non-programmer friends!

Over the course of this four-week summer school, you’ll learn how to apply the principles of programming you’ve already explored to the creation of your own game experiences. The first three weeks are about building and consolidating new knowledge; the final week is about applying all of those skills to generate a video game project that you and your peers will be proud of.

Here’s a week-by-week breakdown of what we’ll cover while you’re with us:

Week 1: Programming in C#

You’ll already have some familiarity with the fundamentals of programming from your studies this year. This week will introduce a game-relevant programming language built on the principles of C-style programming. C# is a useful language to have in your toolkit in general – it’s a well-supportedlanguage intended to allow the fast prototyping of Windows applications, with a wealth of integrated plug-ins courtesy of Microsoft’s .NET Framework. It’s useful in game development because the Unity Game Engine relies upon it as a means of scripting the behaviours of our game entities.

Week 2: Introduction to Game Design

Game Design is its own specialist discipline, but the basic principles can be explored relatively simply. During this week you’ll get a crash-course in what makes a game a game, what you should keep in mind when turning an ‘idea’ into a ‘game concept’, and how you translate a concept in your head into a fun, playable experience.

Week 3: Fast Prototyping in Unity

Over the course of the third week you’ll be introduced to the Unity Game Engine. This is a popular engine for general application development – not just game development – but the focus for this Summer School is its use in the creation of Games. Unity has a user-friendly, drag-and-drop interface for the creation of entities within our game world, and an intuitive scripting system build upon the C# programming language we introduced in week 1. Week 4: The Project

During the final week of the Summer School, you will gather into teams and be given a design brief of a game. You’ll have support in this from staff, but it’ll be your project and you’ll have to take the lead in its development. On the final day of the School, the teams will come together to play each others games and give each other feedback on how they can be taken further in the future.

Doing Business in Asia 2 (Level 2, Advanced)

This module is designed for final year undergraduate university students as well as post-graduate students. Doing Business in Asia 2 (Advanced) seeks to equip students with a detail understanding of the Asian economic and social landscapes, as well as the unique forms of capitalism and business that have emerged within it. Drawing on the expertise of several specialists from within the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS), students will be introduced to current economic, social and business related issues within the region. In addition to traditional seminars, students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the region through a combination of company site visits and business simulation activities.
